  18. Bitcoin recently had a transaction fee crisis, where rapidly rising transaction rates caused the fees to hike as high as as median of $34 in December. This now appears to be over, according to a report by Ars Technica. What do you think - will the Bitcoin fees stay low like they are now, or is this just a temporary lull before renewed investor interest drives the prices high again?

  20. The whole crypto market is in a huge crash. Bitcoin price keeps going down, it is nearly at $7000 USD today. Do you think it will go lower? Will we see Bitcoin at $5000 by the end of February?
  21. I recently received the following email from Coinbase: Has anyone seen these extra fees when buying Bitcoin from Coinbase? Do you know of any other sites that allow purchasing Bitcoin without "cash advance" credit card fees?
  22. Today I read a news report saying that armed robbers broke into someone's home and forced them to transfer Bitcoin at gunpoint. This is a scary story, it could happen to anyone who publicly announces that they have bitcoins. How can I protect my Bitcoin against physical theft? Should I just not tell anyone that I have some? I wonder if there is some way to use a Ledger Nano S or Trezor device to protect against this kind of theft.
  23. Are there any examples in the wild of Bitcoin related malware targeting printer firmware? There are some known flaws in PostScript that can allow attackers to exfiltrate sensitive information from printers, including the contents of print jobs or the password for the printer's control system. This same principle could be used in several different ways to attack owners of Bitcoin wallets. Anyone printing the private key or recovery phrase for their wallet could have this exfiltrated from the network by a malicious attacker. Or potentially the printer drivers could be hooked with a back-door that scans printed documents for cryptocurrency-related terms and then forwards the document to a third-party. There was a discussion some time ago on Bitcointalk about printer security. There were some interesting points raised, especially about the necessity of clearing printer memory after using it for any sensitive documents, in case a hacker was able to recover your Bitcoin wallet seed from the printer cache. But so far I haven't seen any more sophisticated examples of this out in the wild. Surely it's only a matter of time, though...
  24. Swissquote Bank have introduced what they call a "Bitcoin Active Certificate". This is an algorithmically traded certificate based on holding a combination of Bitcoin and USD in balance. The exact ratio between the two is determined by a machine learning algorithm designed to reduce risk during times of extreme volatility, and produce more reliable long-term gains. According to the Swissquote announcement, the strategy works like this: This is an interesting approach - combining machine learning with some pre-defined rules about what represents a sane risk-management strategy. And it definitely reduces the barrier to entry for new users who are concerned about the risk of investing in cryptocurrencies. I wonder if there are any other machine learning powered algorithms out there that have been successfully trading the market so far?
